Introduction:
First of all we should not let emotions get the best of our judgement when researching for articles pertaining to child abuse.
As such, the recent articles/news the criminal often the parent of the victim are crucified for their abuse, and how they are 'inhumane' and bashed for their actions; the news/articles centers in fast reaction of emotion and that has been the major focus while there are less reporting on how to solve or help the victims long term.
Child abuse is happening and it is the reality and it should not be handled with warped with biased views.
Specially, we can see the majority of people's reaction based on how the news and articles are being represented, meaning if the news are biased the people's views are affected by such presentation.
As an example I will put a good and bad examples on how articles handle the topic of 'child abuse' below'.
The two examples:
- Hiroi, Tazuko 'People in Japan back then we're indifferent to 'Child Abuse' and why it is now a problem'広井 多鶴子『昔の日本人が無関心だった「児童虐待」なぜこれほど問題化したのか』
<https://gendai.ismedia.jp/articles/-/59498>
26th of January, 2019 - Masuzoe, Youichi 'How to protect children's lives a from child abuse, how Edo Japan's *Ayamari-yaku can be the solution'舛添 要一『虐待から子どもの命を守るために:江戸の「あやまり役」に学ぶ』
<https://blogos.com/article/355198/>
1st of February, 2019
*(あやまり役 in Japanese and it is like the people or actors taking the role/service of 'apologizing' for the client(s) to then make amends with the people the client(s) have injured/hurt)
Simple background information on the two article's authors:
The article on the first link's author is Prof. Hiroi, Tazuko (広井 多鶴子), who has a professional background on Educational Administration and a professor on 実践女子大学 (Jissen Women's University) while the second link's author is the previous Governor of Tokyo, Mr.Masuzoe, Youichi (舛添 要一).
Both of them have a serious responsibility to carry as the issue of child abuse is a very serious one.
Comments on each articles:
The first article has factual data and includes the update on the law in Japan pertaining to child abuse and has a deep knowledge in Japanese Household Issues/Problems and the recent changes that affects/relates to child abuse are covered.
The second article denies the 'modern' society's way of communication/relations while deeming Japan in the Edo period as the good old days, as the people back then have more 'responsible people' than today.
Hence, the more responsible people there is, the less child abuse 'occurs'.
My comment on the second article:
It is very disappointing that such person of power and nonetheless a position of leading people can write such a biased article and the way it was ignorantly handled dismissed the issue as just another issue.
It was appalling to say the very least.
Conclusion:
I will say it again that news and articles should have to be based or have factual data and to also have an unbiased stance to the problem as that will benefit in helping to understand the victims circumstance as clearly so that we and hopefully others will see the severity/gravity of the issue.
Personal opinion:
Personally, I do not like the way some articles hype the problem like a fast-fashion trend (as fast fashion is not sustainable and it easily come and go), of course it will help make people be interested and curious, but to what cost?
Why must the children's integrity, self-value and safety be sacrificed for people's entertainment (especially, the repeated publishing of the victim's/abuser's photo, name and residence. Why can't it be centered on the abuse itself, warning and educating people in the process about what abuse is and the the aftermath, and also the betterment of the victim's circumstance) or be a trophy of hypocrisy?
(In my opinion Mr.Masuzoe's article is a trophy of 'speaking out' out of hypocrisy and was ignorant on the impact of his actions by handling the issue as 'just' another issue.)
